FeitenTrue or false?
Most of the time, sexual assault or rape is committed by someone who is a stranger to the victim. Answer: False. Approximately 2/3 or 73% of rapes were committed by someone known to the victim - such as her date, her classmate, her neighbor or her friend. Despite myths that men who sexually assault women are monsters hiding in bushes, they are much more often known and trusted to the victim. They are men who are socialized with the same messages as the rest of us - the only difference between them and us is that, at a certain point, we stop while they continue and cross the line into behavior that is considered to be illegal. We tend to make monsters out of abusers and rapists as a means of supporting our position that we are very different from them. However, we need to examine, challenge, and change the aspects of male socialization that tolerate violence against women. We need to look critically at the messages boys and men are taught about how they should relate to women’s bodies and their sexuality. Once we understand and explore this, we can become part of the solution that can change it and decrease violence against women. Zie: http://www.acalltomen.org/empower |
